Getting started: the RAIF

How to start with the RAIF, what it costs, what it proves and what happens if you do not pass.

Getting started: the RAIF

Can I start in AI governance without paying anything?

Yes, with the RAIF (Responsible AI Foundation) open assessment: 20 practice questions with answer key and explanations, free all year. It issues no certificate or badge: it is there to help you prepare for the official exam. The credential comes with the RAIF itself, the DPCert entry-level certification: 50 questions, 60 minutes, a 70% pass mark and no prerequisite. Unlike a course completion certificate, it is earned through an exam, comes with a public verification code and a signed Open Badge, and never expires. It covers the essentials: what AI is, risks and harms, principles and frameworks such as the NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001 and the EU AI Act, data protection for AI and responsible use at work.

Is the RAIF free? How much does it cost?

The RAIF costs USD 100, like the other certifications. As a Black Friday flash promotion, it is free during November 2026, until 30 November 2026 at 23:59 Brasília time; from 1 December 2026 it costs USD 100. What is free all year is the RAIF open assessment: 20 practice questions with answer key and explanations, with no certificate or badge, to help you prepare for the official exam. The current price is shown on the certification page in your billing currency, and the exam, the credential, the Open Badge and the PDF certificate carry no annual or renewal fees.

How do I start the RAIF?

If you want to prepare first, start with the free open assessment: 20 questions with an answer key. For the official exam, go to the RAIF page: while the Black Friday flash promotion is on, you click start, sign in (or create an account), confirm your email, and the exam right is issued immediately, with no payment screen; outside the promotion, you buy the exam as for any other certification. After that, open the exam when you have the full 60 minutes free: the clock starts when you open it and does not stop. You can take the exam in English, Portuguese or Spanish.

Does the RAIF satisfy the EU AI Act AI literacy requirement?

Not in the sense of "complying": no certificate makes an organisation compliant with the EU AI Act, and the European Commission has indicated that there is no mandatory AI literacy certificate. What the RAIF offers is verifiable evidence that a person has demonstrated essential knowledge of responsible AI, which an organisation can include in its internal AI literacy records, alongside the training and policies it adopts itself.

What happens if I fail the RAIF?

It depends on how you took the exam. If it was free, under the Black Friday flash promotion, you have 7 calendar days from the result to retake the RAIF at no cost: the retake button appears in your account, and the result email states the deadline. If you fail again within that cycle, you get a new 7-day window. If the deadline passes without a new attempt, the right expires, and a new free enrolment is only possible 30 days later, and while the promotion lasts. If you bought the exam, the paid certification rule applies: no waiting period and no limit on attempts, each with a new voucher.

Is the RAIF credential verifiable in the same way as the others?

Yes. The RAIF credential is issued like any other: a public verification code, a signed Open Badge, a PDF certificate with a QR code, the option to appear in the public directory and no expiry date. What changes is the level: the RAIF proves the essentials, while RAIP, DPAI, RAIL, AUDAI and RAI-X assess application, leadership, audit and executive decision-making.
