How to prepare, what the online exam is like and what happens with the result.
Exams: format and preparation
What is the certification exam like? Is it online?
Yes, it is an online multiple-choice exam, taken in your own browser, with no scheduling and no exam centre. Questions describe work situations and ask for a decision, rather than testing memorised definitions, and the RAIL and the AUDAI also have a case analysis domain. Every question has four options and exactly one correct answer. All exams have 50 questions; the duration and the passing score of each are on the certification page.
In which languages is the exam available?
Every exam, including the RAIF, is available in English, Portuguese and Spanish, and you choose the language when you open the exam. The three versions have the same questions, the same answer key and the same pass mark; the translations were written to read naturally for native speakers, with the technical terminology of the field. The site, the candidate handbook and support also work in all three languages. The certificate is always issued in English.
Do I need to take a course before the certification exam?
No. No course is required, and no course guarantees a pass. The exam assesses what you know, not where you studied. There may be partners who prepare candidates, and you may use them if you want, but buying training is never a condition for sitting a DPCert exam.
Do I need experience or another certification first?
Not experience: we do not ask for proof of years in a role, a degree or an employer letter. Another certification, only in two cases: the RAIL and the AUDAI require the RAIP or the DPAI credential first. RAIF, RAIP, DPAI and RAI-X have no prerequisite, and the RAIF is recommended before the RAIP. Worth knowing: questions ask for decisions in real situations, so people who have never worked near the subject usually need to study more.
How should I prepare? Are there practice questions?
Start from the certification syllabus, which publishes the domains assessed and the weight of each, and study in order of weight. The candidate handbook sets out the exam rules, and the site glossary explains responsible AI and data protection terms in three languages. Every certification has a free open assessment of 20 practice questions on the Open Assessment page, drawn from a separate bank that is never used in the exam. If you are starting out, the RAIF open assessment is a good measure of where you stand.
How long do I have to complete the certification exam?
It depends on the certification: 60 minutes for the RAIF, the RAIP and the RAI-X, 120 for the DPAI, 150 for the RAIL and the AUDAI. The clock starts when you open the exam and belongs to the server, not your browser: reloading the page, switching devices or closing the browser gives no time back. It is worth opening the exam only when you have the full time available.
When can I sit the exam after buying?
Whenever you want. A voucher bought on the site has no expiry date, so there is no scheduled date, no registration window and no risk of losing what you paid for by putting it off. For a free exam, such as the RAIF during its Black Friday flash promotion, the exam right also stays in your account until you open the exam.
Can I go back to earlier questions and change answers?
You can, as many times as you like, while there is time left. You can flag a question to revisit, and before finishing you get a review screen with every question numbered, showing which were answered, which were flagged and how many are blank.
What happens if time runs out before I finish?
The exam is submitted automatically and scored with whatever you had already answered. Nothing is lost: each answer is saved on the server the moment you select it, not at the end. Blank questions count as wrong, and if your score reaches the passing score you pass normally.
What happens if I have a technical problem during the exam?
Return to the same exam at the same address: the attempt resumes with the same questions, in the same order, and everything you had already answered. No new voucher is needed. The clock keeps running while you are away, so come back as soon as you can. If the problem was on our side and compromised your exam, write to [email protected] and we will release a new attempt at no cost.
Can I pause the exam and continue later?
There is no pause. You can leave and come back, and the exam resumes where you left it, but the deadline is counted from the moment you opened it and never stops. Stepping away for half an hour means half an hour less to answer. Also remember that leaving the exam window is recorded, as the integrity section explains.
Can I sit the exam from any country?
You can. The exam is online and taken in your own browser, with no exam centre and no scheduling, so the only requirement is a stable connection for the duration of the exam. There is no mandatory time zone, no sitting window and no country restriction, and the credential is issued in English so it can travel anywhere.
Do you offer accessibility support or extended time?
Yes. The exam screen works with a keyboard and a screen reader, and the timer does not interrupt reading every second. Anyone with a disability or health condition that affects their reading or response time can request 25% more time in the account, under Certification exams, before using the voucher, by ticking a self-declaration, with no medical report. If you are sitting the exam in a language that is not your first language and need support, or for any other need, write to [email protected] or see the accessibility page.
Result and retaking
When do I get the certification exam result?
Immediately. When you finish, the screen itself shows your score and your performance in each domain assessed. There is no board, no marking queue and no waiting days. If you pass, the credential is issued right then and the verification code appears on that same screen. If the exam records exits from its window above the limit, the credential is issued within 3 business days, and the screen says so.
How hard is the exam, and what is the passing score?
The passing score is 70% for the RAIF, RAIP, DPAI and RAI-X, and 72% for the RAIL and the AUDAI, which are higher-level. There is no curve and no comparison with other candidates, and every question has exactly one correct answer. On difficulty: we do not publish pass rates yet, because DPCert is new and we will only publish figures with a large enough sample. Questions ask for decisions in real situations, so studying from the syllabus makes a difference.
Can I see which areas I did well or badly in?
Yes. The result shows your score in each domain assessed, whether you passed or not, and that reading is what tells you what to study before trying again. Per-domain performance is kept in your account, next to the credential. It does not appear on the certificate or on your public profile: it is your evidence, not a shop window.
What if I do not pass the certification exam?
Not passing on one attempt closes no doors. You get the result with your per-domain score, showing where the gaps are, and you can try again. Nothing is recorded publicly: attempts that did not pass never appear in the verifier, on your profile, or anywhere visible to third parties. The retake rule differs between an exam taken at no cost, such as the RAIF during its Black Friday flash promotion, and a paid exam, and both are explained in this FAQ.
Can I retake a paid exam? Do I have to wait?
You can retake it, and for paid certifications there is no waiting period and no limit on attempts. Each new attempt requires a new voucher, because each voucher is worth one attempt. Questions are drawn afresh each time you open an exam, so a retake does not repeat the previous paper. If you do not pass, you receive a coupon to buy the new attempt at the same certification for half the price, valid for 90 days. For a RAIF taken at no cost under the Black Friday flash promotion, the rule is different: a free retake within 7 days of the result.
