Who this is for

  • You will own the AI governance program

You have been asked to set up or run AI governance across the organization and need a structure that works beyond a policy document.

  • You lead privacy or compliance and AI is now part of your remit

You already run a privacy program or hold the DPAI, and need to extend it to AI with ISO/IEC 42001 and enterprise risk in view.

  • You advise organizations on AI governance

As a consultant or in-house advisor, you design programs and prepare teams for ISO/IEC 42001 audits, and need leadership-level command of the topic.

What you take with you

Test your knowledge with the Open Assessment

The Open Assessment has twenty questions at the level of the certification exam, with the result on the spot and a score for each domain. It is the honest way to decide whether you are ready.

See what the questions are like

Sample questions in the exam format: a work situation and a decision. The certification exam uses different questions.

  1. The charter of a payments company's AI committee says it "reviews and advises on" AI use cases. In its first year, two business units launched high-risk systems against its recommendations, and nobody had to justify the decision. Which change to the charter most directly addresses this?

    1. AMake the chief executive the committee chair, so that its recommendations carry more weight with business heads
    2. BIncrease the meeting frequency, so that recommendations reach business units well before their launch dates
    3. CGive the committee defined decision rights over high-risk use cases, with a documented escalation route for disputes
    4. DRequire business units to attach the committee's recommendation to the documentation of each launch
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C

The gap is authority: an advisory mandate lets business units ignore the committee without consequence. A charter should state decision rights, for example approve, approve with conditions or reject for defined risk tiers, and how disagreements escalate, such as to the executive committee, so that overriding the committee becomes a visible and accountable decision. A senior chair adds influence, but influence is not a decision right and the mandate stays advisory. More meetings deliver advice sooner that can still be ignored. Attaching the recommendation records the disagreement but requires no one to resolve it.

  2. A software group wants ISO/IEC 42001 certification quickly. The project team proposes a scope covering only the internal analytics unit, the most mature one, while sales materials would describe the whole company as "ISO/IEC 42001 certified". How should the governance lead respond?

    1. AReject the narrow scope, since the standard requires the management system to cover every AI activity of the organization
    2. BAccept a justified narrow scope, but require that any external claim describe exactly what the certificate covers
    3. CAccept the plan, since the certificate is issued to the legal entity and can therefore be presented as the company's
    4. DPostpone certification until every unit reaches the same maturity, so that the scope can cover the whole group
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B

ISO/IEC 42001 lets the organization determine the boundaries of its AI management system, considering its context, interested parties and AI roles, and the scope must be available as documented information. A limited scope can be legitimate. What is not acceptable is implying broader coverage than the certificate gives: the certificate states its scope, and public claims must match it. The standard does not require every AI activity to be in scope. Presenting a unit's certificate as the whole company's misleads customers, whatever legal entity is named on it. Waiting for uniform maturity is not required and delays the benefits; the scope can be extended in later cycles.

Frequently asked questions about the certification exam

›What does the RAIL cover?

Building and running an AI governance programme: charter, committee, policies and RACI; the ISO/IEC 42001 AI management system, with its clauses and Annex A controls; integration with enterprise risk management and board reporting; multi-jurisdiction regulatory strategy; AI incident and crisis management; culture, training and escalation channels; and case analysis across all of these topics.

›What is the prerequisite for the RAIL?

Holding the RAIP or the DPAI credential. Whoever leads an AI governance programme needs a command of either AI risk practice or data protection, and the RAIL starts from there. The prerequisite is checked when you buy the exam on its own and when you open it. In the Responsible AI Track bundle (RAIP + RAIL), you sit the RAIP first and the RAIL opens once you pass.

›What is the RAIL exam like?

There are 50 questions in 150 minutes, and you pass with 72%. Most start from a work situation, and the case analysis domain, with 5 questions, describes an organisation and asks for leadership decisions, such as prioritising risks, structuring a committee or responding to an incident. The exam is online, in English, Portuguese or Spanish, and costs USD 100.

›Is the RAIL an ISO 42001 Lead Implementer certification?

No. The RAIL covers ISO/IEC 42001 in depth, with clauses, Annex A controls and certification readiness, but it is not a Lead Implementer certificate, it is not issued by ISO or an accredited body and it does not certify your organisation. It proves you can run an AI governance programme, and ISO/IEC 42001 is an important part of that.

›Who is the RAIL for?

For people who own, or will own, an organisation AI governance programme: responsible AI leads, risk and compliance managers, DPOs and privacy leads who have taken on AI, and technology and data managers. If you apply AI but do not run the programme, the RAIP is usually the right choice.

›What is the certification exam like? Is it online?

Yes, it is an online multiple-choice exam, taken in your own browser, with no scheduling and no exam centre. Questions describe work situations and ask for a decision, rather than testing memorised definitions, and the RAIL and the AUDAI also have a case analysis domain. Every question has four options and exactly one correct answer. All exams have 50 questions; the duration and the passing score of each are on the certification page.

›How hard is the exam, and what is the passing score?

The passing score is 70% for the RAIF, RAIP, DPAI and RAI-X, and 72% for the RAIL and the AUDAI, which are higher-level. There is no curve and no comparison with other candidates, and every question has exactly one correct answer. On difficulty: we do not publish pass rates yet, because DPCert is new and we will only publish figures with a large enough sample. Questions ask for decisions in real situations, so studying from the syllabus makes a difference.

›Can I retake a paid exam? Do I have to wait?

You can retake it, and for paid certifications there is no waiting period and no limit on attempts. Each new attempt requires a new voucher, because each voucher is worth one attempt. Questions are drawn afresh each time you open an exam, so a retake does not repeat the previous paper. If you do not pass, you receive a coupon to buy the new attempt at the same certification for half the price, valid for 90 days. For a RAIF taken at no cost under the Black Friday flash promotion, the rule is different: a free retake within 7 days of the result.

›Does the voucher expire?

A voucher bought on the site does not expire. Vouchers issued to an organisation in bulk may carry a deadline set at issuance, and in that case the date is shown with the code. If you lost the email, the code is also in your account, under Certification exams, once your address is confirmed.

›What is the refund policy? Can I cancel my purchase?

Yes, within 14 days of purchase, as long as the voucher has not been used. Write to [email protected] from the same email used in the purchase, saying you want a refund. We return the full amount through the same payment method and cancel the voucher at the same time. A voucher already used is not refundable, even within the 14 days, because the attempt is consumed when the exam is opened. For a bundle, the refund covers the whole bundle and only applies if none of its vouchers has been used. After 14 days, the voucher is still yours and never expires, but it is no longer refundable.

›Does the DPCert credential expire? Do I need to renew it?

No and no. A DPCert credential does not expire: there is no expiry date, no periodic retesting, no continuing education quota (CPE/CPD), no renewal fee and no annual dues. You sit the exam once, and the credential stays valid unless revoked. Revocation is an administrative act with a recorded reason, not an automatic expiry. No renewal fees. No CPE quotas. Many certifications on the market charge periodic upkeep; this one does not.
